about

This song seems obvious to me. I am surprised I haven’t heard it already. Perhaps someone already wrote it but, like me, doesn’t have much of an audience. I couldn’t even begin to tell you about all the genius artists I know or have known. They have been having it rough these last few decades. It wasn’t always that way. Before radios, photos and albums, people had intimate relationships with artists. They interacted in person rather than let corporations dictate whose music is worth hearing. Maybe we are getting back to that now. With just a few bucks you can pretty much put Abbey Road Studios on your laptop. The trouble now is connection. That is both harder and easier than ever today.

lyrics

Hard to Love

All the great artists are bartenders or waitresses.
See them suffer for their art pushing that cart of dirty dishes.

All the poets, playwrights and musicians…
Are either gas station clerks or they found some work in service positions.

There’s operas no one has heard. Paintings no one has seen.
Tucked away in little boxes and crates.
I guess some might make it someday.
While the rest fade away.
For some, success comes too late.

And all the mad scientists and geniuses.
Sold out their dreams, but it’s not as bad as it seems, it’s just business.

He was ahead of his time but it did no good. It was just a joke.
No one understood the languages he spoke.
Except that one mad scientist who had already gone… corporate.
So he stole all his patents and hid them in his basement.

Yes it’s hard to love.
A world… so cruel.
It’s hard to love
A world that turns a genius to a fool.
