Marco Descalzo This album delivers all the emotion a man can express on a performance, you really feel close to him. The raw sound of the recording is part of the trip, like the noize of the wheels of a roller coaster. Favorite track: Devil at my Door.

about

“Does this sound like you?”

That is a question I hear time and time again when people come up to me after a gig looking to buy a CD. Accommodating such a request has been difficult for me. I am a recording artist at heart. When it comes to recording I enjoy creating an atmosphere to suit the song. I enjoy layering and especially enjoy bringing in other talented musicians to add their unique flavors to the mix. So I have been avoiding making this record…

Until now.

I started experimenting with the one man band about a decade ago in an effort to make a greater spectacle of myself. I never meant to take it this far but, to quote Lennon, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” My one man band has since grown into a monster. It started to incorporate more instruments. I picked up a banjo… a 1940’s lap steel… an accordion… constructed a percussion set from accordion cases, wooden boxes, license plates and tambourines… and there is still more to come.

The man behind this monstrosity has transformed as well… into something both familiar and foreign to me… a rambling vagabond… an old time snake oil salesman… a barefoot mystic… with some apparent bad habits… an overdeveloped libido… perhaps something of a drinking problem… and certainly an impaired decision making process. This bowler wearing madman is both me and not me. I will speak neither of who is who nor where the two meet. This is an act and I am an actor.

“RacKeT” is my first honest attempt to put this act on a recording. I have done my best to recreate the spirit of the live “J.P.Whipple” shows. For the most part, the lead instruments were recorded along with the “trash” drums. This presents some difficulties as most of my lead instruments are acoustic. I could have taken the two apart. Recorded the drums first but I found that the “live” takes were usually more spirited even with their flaws. This is certainly a flawed recording… DIY… lo-fi… but it is honest… real… I personally find it refreshing in this day and age where even the most useless musician can Pro-Tool his way to sterile perfection. True art is never perfection. It is never capturing something and murdering the life in it… beating out every minute semblance of humanness… or surrendering it completely to the Machine’s that we let rule our lives. True art is reaching for the stars… knowing full well that you can’t quite touch them… but the real excitement… the real value… is the ride and seeing how close you can get.

Here is RacKeT: One man flaying on an instrument with arms… stomping a rhythm with bare feet on accordion case, tambourines and license plates… hollering out the crazy visions of his demented soul. This is me and not me. This is what I do. I do it for you. I hope you enjoy this…
